Also, note that whatever item that you sell or lease and it is an item that can be touched (i.e., tangible such as equipment, toys, merchandise, electronics, prepared food) requires a state sales tax ID (  Sellers Permit  ) to either buy or sell the items or products wholesale and or sell them retail. If you are hiring workers anytime soon, you will need a   Federal EIN   and a   State EIN   (employer identification number). Other instances that you will need a federal tax ID are: if you are a partnership, an independent contractor, and a corporation or an   LLC  . You can also obtain a federal tax ID as a sole proprietor and use it as a business tax ID in the place of a social security number. However, you will still need other registrations, such as licenses, an assumed business name DBA, and tax IDs as described above. Finally, even one person, sole owner/proprietors working from home or just online can form a LLC or incorporate, in which case, they will not need to file a DBA.
I wonder.. is a Trade Name, a Fictitious Name and an Assumed Business Name all the same?; Yes, a trade, assumed and fictitious name are all the same also called a DBA "doing business as" name.. So is a Trade Name a Business Name?; In essense, yes. So for instance if your name is "John Doe," and you do business as "Super Widgets Company," you are using a trade name that is the name of your business.. So what is an Assumed Business Name?; An assumed business name is the name a business uses to do business. For example, Microsoft uses "Microsoft," as its business name.

There are many terms describing a Trade Name:

A TX A Trade Business Name is also called a DBA, Fictitious Business Name, Fictitious Firm Name, or Doing Business As.

When a business is doing business as for example Costco, Costco is a doing business as name for that company. AKA DBA.

What is a DBA?  HI, I am in California. I have a fictitious business name for the town I live in and now I am moving to a different address in t he same town they tell me I have to purchase a NEW/ assumed business name for the new home address (!) In addition, I will now be able to sell my artwork from a studio space that is in a different, nearby town...do I need a separate one for that also? did you see my question? do I need Separate license for a different town/ nearby town, in the same state? And when what about events, like art fairs, tc. that are in different towns? how does that work? I have a dba.

A dba stands for Doing Business As and it is the same as a fictitious, assumed or trade name certificate or business name certificate.
